Excusions If you are on your way to Siena from Florence, and you have time to spare, we suggest the following alternativeitinerary: Historical Notes Linari is a tiny fortified villane situated on the top of a hill in Val d’Elsa. To get there, one follows through Barberino Val d’Elsa, following the road to Poggibonsi. A sing on the rigt bifore Poggibonsi indicates Sant’Appiano-Linari. This road is beautiful and gives a spectacular view of Tuscany. On clear days one can see the Apuane Alps, the Appennino and Monte Amiata. The Chapel of San Michele Arcangelo is particularly interesting. It was built in 1597 by the Saints of Tito and is a reproduction 1:8 of Brunelleschi’s dome of the cathedral in Florence. The Chapel was built on the site of the antique city Semifonte, completely destroyed by the Florentines in 1202. Petrognano represents all that is left today of the lost city of Semifonte. Its stones were later recuperated to build Berberino Val d’Elsa. Certaldo Alto is a town that must be visited. Every building is historical and fascinatine. Not to forget a visit to Casa del Boccaccio, Palazzo Pretorio and the Museo di Arte Sacra. The Chianti region is located in Tuscany and extends between the cities of Florence and Siena. Villas, castles and farm houses are scattered in every hill and valley. The Chianti area is known for its world famous wine, for its history, culture, art and natural beauty. |
